The Kosovo media landscape is characterised by new, ill-managed media outlets, in an environment of an incomplete legal frame, weak economy, underdeveloped market and lack of foreign investment. After five year of post-war investment in the development of media in Kosovo has managed to equip it technically with computer and modern broadcasting equipment, but it has failed to invest in raising the professional standard of reporting of journalists that operate with this technology. Kosovo still lacks a training institution for journalists. Media are not self-sustaining, remain mostly donor-funded and are typically managed by journalists with little or no background in management, raising questions about their survival and long-term sustainability - especially with minority media that broadcast or print in two languages. Only a few media report professionally. The reporting by Radio Television Kosovo (RTK) has been dramatically unprofessional and biased, recently (especially in the riots of March 2004), and RTK has lost all credibility.
In Kosovo, Press Now is mainly focused on structural support to media outlets addressing minority needs. Next to that, Press Now is monitoring the developments within RTK and the Association of Professional Journalists.
