HISTORY
Press Now was established in 1993 by several journalists, politicians and other engaged individuals, supported by the Dutch Federation of Journalists (NVJ) and political and cultural centre 'De Balie' in Amsterdam - all concerned about the ongoing war in Yugoslavia.

Press Now was founded in order to support independent media in the former Yugoslavia that offered an alternative to the propaganda and hate speech of the state media. Press Now supported TV and radio stations, newspapers, magazines, and some internet media in Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Due to the conflicts in Kosovo and Macedonia, and the crisis in Albania, Press Now extended its activities to these regions as well.

In 2003 Press Now started supporting independent media in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, and explored needs and opportunities for media development work in the Caucasus and Central Asia. In 2004 Press Now extended its media support towards conflict regions and countries in transition on the way to democracy, more in general. At present, Press Now supports over 100 projects throughout the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Since its start, Press Now's mission has been the promotion of democracy and human rights, through support to independent media. Press Now has continuously adapted its strategies to local and political media-related developments. Whilst in the beginning the support consisted mainly of emergency aid to individual media outlets, later the focus of activities has shifted towards longer term investments and strategies, resulting in multi-year project agreements with partners in the region.

Press Now has a staff of nine people at its headquarters in Amsterdam, and one local representative in Belgrade.
