Second journalism training course in Turkey organized by Press Now

Press Now and IPS Communication Foundation (BIA) organized a two-day journalism training course in North of Turkey on 24 and 25 November 2007. The course was part of a training program which is financially supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the two-day training, 26 journalists from various media in the Ordu and Giresun provinces have discussed the problems in local journalism, universal journalistic values, media ethics and photography techniques.

The trainers Ragip Duran of Galatasaray University in Istanbul and Nico Haasbroek, former editor in chief of the Dutch national news programme, have focused on media ethics and creative journalism while Esra Arsan of Bilgi University explored the role of journalists as detached and impartial observers in conflict situations. Especially, “the principles of conflict reporting” triggered a very lively debate among participants due to recent developments in Turkey. The participant journalists also attended a workshop on photo journalism by photographer Yücel Tunca.

The training, in addition to its substantive content, gave opportunity to participants to enlarge their networks and increase cooperation between various media outlets.

Press Now and BIA will organize four more courses in Turkey until April 2009.
This training programme has started in August 2007 with a seminar for the journalists in Southeast Turkey.
