Press Now conducts civil journalism training in Iraq

From 1 till 10 February 2008, Press Now conducts a civil journalism training workshop for 45 journalists in Suleymania, Iraqi Kurdistan. Main viewpoint in the training is that a journalist is part of society and therefore should write about developments and problems that civilians encounter. The training is also meant to improve basic journalistic skills.

The training is conducted in cooperation with the local NGO CDO in Suleymania. It includes workshops in which journalists work on a press conference, news items, a news coverage and/or news feature – and at the same time will be taught to keep the civilians reading their articles in mind. Attention will also be given to the principle of separating facts from opinions in news reporting, the use of multiple sources and interviewing skills. All participants are working for Kurdish media in Suleymania. The courses will be completed with a short train-the-trainers course, to teach the group how to share their new knowledge with their colleagues at their paper or station back home.

Trainers are Goran Baba Ali (editor-in-chief of Ex Ponto magazine), Khidr Domle (freelance journalist), Shwan Mohamed (editor at Awene), Judit Neurink (editor at Trouw daily), Richard Grootbod (editor at RNC) and Marieke de Vries (reporter of the Dutch national news service NOS).

Judit Neurink and Marieke de Vries are writing a daily weblog (in Dutch) at http://www.trouw.nl/hetnieuws/wereld/article521404.ece and  http://www.nos.nl/nosjournaal/artikelen/2008/2/2/weblog_koerdistan.html.
