Media workshop in Pamukkale by Press Now and IPS Communication Foundation, Turkey

Press Now and IPS Communication Foundation have organised the fourth journalism workshop in the Aegean region of Turkey on 24-25 May.

Twenty-one participant journalists from Aydın, Muğla and Denizli provinces have worked with Nico Haasbroek former editor in chief of the Dutch national news programme, Esra Arsan of Bilgi Universty and Yücel Tunca from Photography Foundation about ‘media ethics’, ‘process of news making’ and ‘photo journalism’. The workshop was part of a training program which is financially supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the Matra Program.

During the two-day training local journalists, half of them women, mentioned that interest relations between local authorities, security officials and business people are obstacles in front of independent news making. Moreover copy rights appear to be a great financial burden for local media. Besides freedom of expression and article 301, financial and ethical pitfalls of publishing official advertisements were also discussed. Recent fatal accidents in Tuzla ship yards resulting from lack of proper health & safety regulations were among the topics that triggered lively debate about the responsibilities of journalists.

Participant journalists expressed their wish for having more of these media workshops.
