Journalists discussed media ethics in Kars, Turkey

Press Now and IPS Communication Foundation have organized the fifth journalism training in the east of Turkey on 11 and 12 October. Journalists from Kars and Iğdır provinces discussed the process of news making, creative journalism and photo journalism during the two-day workshop. The training is part of the Matra Turkey program financially supported by Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Esra Arsan of Bilgi University, Yücel Tunca of the Photography Foundation and journalism teacher, trainer Robert Slagt worked with the participants in parallel sessions. During the training there was a special focus on financial vulnerability of the local media. Robert Slagt and Esra Arsan paid special attention to the importance of making balanced, objective and independent news urging journalists to promote public interest, not the interests of local authorities. Yucel Tunca made a presentation about the history of photo journalism and showed journalists how to be more selective and creative. He too urged journalists to catch the human touch while taking photos not only displaying talking heads of the local VIPs.
Participant journalists repeatedly expressed their satisfaction about the training and requested to have more of these trainings.
